So, last week I became vegan… how did that work out you ask? Well it started out fantastic. I ate a whole lot of fresh fruit and veggies. I tried new vegan alternatives to meat that were fantastic. I love soy milk. I hate soy “cheese”. I had kept to it with only one slip up over the weekend… until Tuesday. I had been haunted by the thought of ice cream for days, then I let myself get too hungry, and then the “I want a heavy comfort food meal” feeling set in and I was done for. I caved and went to McDonalds. Yes, I know I could have picked something healthier but my tummy threw a temper tantrum and I gave in. I’ve done much better since then though.

That leads me to this week’s goal. I’m going to try adding back diary and eggs. I think that with those, I’ll still keep up the healthy veggies and fruit but I won’t feel deprived.

This week I’m thankful for the loving and supportive people in my life. My life is getting ready to change drastically and it’s all because there are people out there willing to take a chance on me. I love each and every one of them dearly.

Wednesday WIP’s

I’m knitting away on the Dandy Neckerchief. I’m into the second skein of three.

I am also knitting the Frill-edged bolero from Sirdar Juicy Book 354 in Louisa Harding Grace Silk and Wool. It’s going to be a shop sample at A Likely Yarn.

I have made a little bit of progress on the Nightingale socks and I’m getting much better with knitting with two colors using both hands. It takes a few minutes to get my rhythm but then it seems almost natural.

I finished my Vanilla with a Twist socks this week. They started out as a plain vanilla pair of socks but I decided to put a tight cable up the back of the leg to hopefully give it some support. I used the rest of my Intentions sock yarn to make these.

I’m cursed with flabby grandma arms. When I do the chicken dance, my chickens keep on dancing after I stop. Jillian Michaels has a good tip for how to tone your arms.

The past week was not as though for me as I expected it to be. There were several times that I really wanted a soda, especially when we ate at a restaurant over the weekend. I’ve drank a lot of tea, lemonade, and mineral water this week to fill the void of not having soda. I am very proud to say that I haven’t had a single drop of soda since lunch last Wednesday.

For this week’s goal, I’m going to do something to support my hubby. I will be eating like a vegan this week. It sounds like it’s a bit of a drastic change but I’m just going to try it out and see how I feel. Honestly, I’m really excited about it. I have a fridge full of fresh, in season fruit and I’ve been checking the labels of everything I buy to make sure that it is vegan friendly. There are many soy alternatives to the meats & dairy foods that I’m used to so I don’t think it’s going to be that bad. Also, we’re planning to have a “meat day” once every two weeks because we have friends that became not-so-strict vegetarians and they have a lot of trouble digesting meats and diary products now.

I found a blog called vegan yum yum, that has vegan recipes and every thing looks freaking delicious. I really want to make the fried green tomatoes. Even if I weren’t trying out the vegan thing I think I would totally make recipes from this blog.

So far today I’ve had a glass of soy milk, a nectarine, a grapefruit, a mini bagel with peanut butter, a hand full of baby carrots, rigatoni with grilled onions and green peppers with tomato sauce, and a big handful of cherries and raspberries. If I’m hungry later I’m going to have a bowl of rice chex with soy milk. There’s not much difference between what I’ve eaten today and what I eat on any other day; I just haven’t had any meat, eggs, or diary.

The other thing that makes me super excited about this is that I’ll be inadvertently cutting out high fructose corn syrup.

We’ll see how I feel in a week and how well I’ve done then decide if it is something I’d like to continue.

This week I’m thankful for my Nintendo Wii. We’ve had a lot of rain and hotter than usual temperatures recently which makes it harder to get outside. For the next four days it’s supposed to be in the mid 90’s and I just don’t think I could go outside to exercise in that kind of heat.

Wednesday WIP’s

Sunday I started spinning CJ Kopec’s Jester (2/3 merino and 1/3 colonial). It is incredibly soft and practically spins itself.

Monday I went stash diving and came up with a bunch of destash yarn and some other yarns that I want to knit but have been hanging around for awhile.

I cast on the Dandy Neckerchief in Summer Linen which is a cotton & linen blend. It’s been great to knit with since the summer has certainly arrived. It’s been far too hot to knit wool.

I also cast on a blanket in Cherry Tree Hill cotton/rayon bouclé in the colorway Winterberry. I have four 440 yard – 8 oz skeins. It’s not something I would make a garment out of so he only thing I could imagine making was a blanket. I love the colors! It’s basically a giant Grandma’s Favorite Dishcloth.
